Virginia Woolf - A Haunted House
Virginia Woolf's A Haunted House and Other Stories.
1973 Penguin edition.
Throughout her life, Virginia Woolf from time to time wrote short stories or a kind of sketch which stands half-way between an essay and a short story. As early as 1921 she published Monday or Tuesday, a collection of such short stories. This book soon went out of print and was not republished, but shortly before her death she decided to bring out a new volume of short stories, including most of those originally published in Monday or Tuesday.
A Haunted House, published posthumously in 1944, is the book which she contemplated. It contains all the best stories from the early volume and twelve new ones. Many of them are experimental, opening new paths which she developed still further in her novels. At least three of them have been widely recognised and works of remarkable beauty and originality: 'A Haunted House', 'Kew Gardens', and 'The Mark on the Wall'.
Condition: Very minor scuffing the edges. The spine is cracked in one place but there are no pages missing. Light tanning to pages. A rare and fascinating book with a forward by Virginia Woolf's husband, Leonard Woolf.
